3) Uploading

3 a) Making videos

To make a video, you'll need to have a device that can capture digital movies—this could be a camcorder, digital camera, or even your cell phone! You copy the movies to your computer, and then you can either upload them as-is or edit them with software such as iMovie or Windows Movie Maker to add titles and special effects. Here is some more information;

Making and Optimizing Your Videos

MediaSpurr is designed to make sharing your videos with friends and family as easy as possible. You probably have the tools to make a video already, even if you don't have a camcorder. Web cams, digital cameras, and even cell phones often have video recording features—many digital cameras even have a simple switch to choose between stills and video.
So take a look at what you already have—you may be surprised! Most of these devices record in either the .AVI or .MPG formats, both of which MediaSpurr supports, and the video shot with them can be uploaded directly from the device or after being copied to your computer.

Digital and Analog Camcorders

If you already have a digital camcorder (one that captures in Digital8, MiniDV, HDV, or any of the DVD formats), then you're ready to start shooting your masterpiece. Your camcorder will need some kind of direct connection to your computer, either to the USB or FireWire ports or by inserting the DVD you've recorded. Once you've downloaded the video from the camera, you can upload it to MediaSpurr or bring it into an editing program to play with it some more.

If you have an analog camcorder (one that uses VHS, VHS-C, SVHS-C, 8mm, or Hi8 tape), you can still get your videos onto MediaSpurr. It will require an extra step and some additional equipment, though, since these camcorders are not usually equipped with computer connections. You will need to digitize the video with a converter box, which will convert the analog signal from the camcorder to a digital signal that the computer can understand. After the video has been digitized, you can manipulate it further or upload it.

Editing and Improving Your Videos

If you want to be a bit more hands-on with your video, most new computers come with basic video-editing software installed (like Apple's iMovie or Windows MovieMaker). Once you have copied the video from your phone, camera, or camcorder to your computer, you can bring the video into these programs. Most allow you to not only edit the video, but add effects, titles, and music to make your video look and sound more interesting.

Uploading Your Videos to MediaSpurr

Once you're happy with your final result, you'll need to save the video in a format that MediaSpurr can accept in order to upload. Unless you're a professional video producer, we recommend that you save your videos as either QuickTime .MOV, Windows .AVI, or .MPG files— these are the most common formats and they work well within our system. We specifically recommend the MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format at 640x480 resolution with MP3 audio. Resizing your video to these specifications before uploading will help your clips look better on MediaSpurr.

Uploading Directly with Mobile Devices… Coming Soon….

If you have video capabilities on your cell phone or PDA, you can now upload videos directly from the device to MediaSpurr. So if you get a quick clip of something cool with your phone, you can put it up right away. Just set up your Mobile Upload Options in advance, and then send your videos to the email address you're assigned. All of your mobile videos will have the default tags, title, and description that you set, or you can overwrite them in the email message you send.

Making Your Video Easy to Find

When you upload your video, we require you to choose at least one category and enter at least one tag to describe the content in your video. Adding this information helps other MediaSpurr members find your video, so if you want an audience, help them out! The more accurate the tags are on each video, the easier it is for everyone to find cool videos to watch.

Make your tags as descriptive as you can. Each tag is separated from the others by a comma.

Private videos (and how to share them)…Coming Soon…

While uploading your video, there will be an option at the bottom to make the video private or public. With this option you can choose to or not to share videos with the world.

Uploading Higher Quality Videos

MediaSpurr accepts a wide range of video file formats such as .WMV, .AVI, .MOV, and .MPG. Here are a few things that may work well for you: * MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format
* MP3 audio
* Video resolution: 480x360 or higher
* Frame Rate: 24fps or higher

Video size

Your videos can be up to 40MB in size.

Please note, the longer and/or higher quality your video is, the more compression will be required to fit it into 2GB. You can compress your video using movie editors, like Windows MovieMaker or Apple iMovie.

File formats

MediaSpurr accepts a wide range of video file formats. The video files below are all accepted by MediaSpurr. Some video formats work best and are most compatible with certain computers, software or devices.

* Windows Media Video (.WMV)
* .3GP (cell phones)
* .AVI (windows)
* .MOV (mac)
* .MP4 (ipod/psp)
* .MPEG
* .FLV (adobe flash)
* .SWF (shockwave flash)v
* .MKV (h.264)

If you do not think your current video file format is recognized by MediaSpurr, you may get the best uploading results from converting your file to MPEG4 video with MP3 audio.

To convert any video format to one of the accepted formats it is recommended you use FFMPEG. FFMPEG is a command-line tool, so you may like to use free or commercial software to help convert your file.

Windows Movie Maker, by default saves projects as .MSWMM files. .MSWMM files are project files (which means the file only contains the layout of your video and does not contain the final video itself). MediaSpurr does not accept .MSWMM files. To upload your Windows Movie Maker video to MediaSpurr, select the "Save to My Computer" option to save the file to an accepted format. You can then upload the generated file to MediaSpurr.

Keep in mind that each time you convert or "transcode" a video from one type of compression to another, there will be some loss in quality, similar to making a photocopy of a photocopy.

Avoid transcoding a highly compressed video into a format that is accepted as this produces poor results. You'll get better results by going back to your original video editing software (where you initially edited the video), and re-exporting in a format such as MPEG4 with MP3 audio. If that is not an option, exporting the file as a RAW (uncompressed) video format then encoding it in an external program is another alternative.

How to upload

> Once you've finished editing your video, made sure it's less than 15 minutes, smaller than 2GB in size, and in an acceptable format, you're ready to upload it.

* Click the UPLOAD button in the upper-right-hand corner of any MediaSpurr page.
* Click the "Browse" button to browse for the video file you'd like to upload to our site.
* Select the file you want to upload.
* Click the 'Upload' button to start the uploading process after entering the rest of the details like tags, categories etc.

It can take from a couple minutes to an hour for your video to upload to MediaSpurr. If you're receiving an error with your Upload, you might want to make sure you're attempting to upload a file that's recognized by MediaSpurr. MediaSpurr accepts video files from most digital cameras and camcorders, and cell phones in the .AVI, .MOV, .WMV, and .MPG file formats.

Please note: your video must meet our uploading requirements: no larger than 2GB and no more than 15 minutes in length. If your video does not meet these requirements you will need to re-edit the video file on your computer then upload the new file to our site.

Have more than one video file to upload?
Not a problem! You can upload as many files as you want, one after the other.

4) Trouble Shooting

4 a) Account Issues

Please enter a valid email address.

Whenever you enter a wrong email id while registering or sharing videos in future, this error message will be displayed.

Didn't receive confirmation email

If you have just joined MediaSpurr, the confirmation link is included in the 'Welcome' email you received after signing up. However, if you are now confirming your email after having created your account some time ago, you will need to confirm your email address again.

If you don't receive either the welcome or confirmation email after signing up or by following the email confirmation procedure, check in your email client's spam folder— some spam filters are more aggressive than others in identifying spam. If you still haven't received it after several hours, please try using a separate email address to confirm your email.

The verification code will not accept.

When you sign up to become a MediaSpurr member, the verification code will be sent to your mobile number which has to be entered in the window hat follows after registration. If you haven’t received the verification code on your mobile number, click on resend verification code. Despite several tries, if you do not receive it, contact us on helpdesk@spurr.in

I confirmed my email but I can't log in

If you've confirmed your email address by clicking the link in the email you received and you're still having trouble, try deleting your browser's cache and cookies, relaunching your browser, and logging back in to MediaSpurr. You may need to request another confirmation email, too.

Sign up trouble

As you begin the registration process, if there are any problems with the information you've entered, an error box will appear. In it is some information that might help you work through the complications you're encountering:

Be creative when creating a username.
We recommend adding extra numbers or letters either to the end or the beginning of your desired username and you cannot use special characters or spaces.

Choose a good password.
Make sure that when you create your password and are asked to retype it that you use exactly the same type and case. Our current password requirement is a minimum of 6 characters and is case sensitive. Occasionally our system won't accept certain special characters, so you may want to make sure no special characters are included in the password you're trying to create.

Confirmation through another email address

Once you've created your username, you can have your confirmation email sent to a different email address than the one you entered initially. Simply follow the steps below:

1. Goto the My Profile page
2. Enter your new email id
3. Click on Save
4. Click on the new email confirmation link sent to your new email id

Unsolicited "Reset Password" email

If you've received a "Reset Password" email you weren't expecting, it's probably probably because someone entered your username into our "Reset Password" form. Another user may have done this if they incorrectly believed they are the owner of your username, or if they misspelled theirs. Regardless, unless someone has access to view your email, your account is safe.

Account not appearing in search results

Depending on site traffic, new accounts can take an hour or more to show up in search results after they've been created. Under extremely heavy site traffic we've seen some accounts take over two hours to index.
Please be patient -- your account will appear in the search index shortly!

I never received my password

If you didn't receive an email with your password after you signed up, please try the following to retrieve your account password:
* Check your spam filter folder. The message from MediaSpurr could have been filtered there.
* Adding "@spurr.in" to your address book or filter exception list may also help ensure that the email from us with your password arrives in your inbox.
* If you still do not receive the password reminder your account is probably associated with a different email address.
* You may want to check any alternate email addresses you have for the password reminder, and you can use our "Forgot Username" tool to verify what MediaSpurr accounts are associated with your email address.

Please note: To respect the privacy and security of our users, we don't have access to any passwords and cannot send them to you. You can retrieve your own password, by going to our "Forgot Password" page.

This confirmation link is no longer valid

This error occurs when you are trying to confirm an email address. If the user who is trying to confirm is different than the one who is currently signed in on the computer (this can happen when people share a computer), this error message will appear when you click the link in the confirmation email.

To avoid the error message, make sure that no one is signed into MediaSpurr on the computer before clicking the link in the confirmation email.

If you receive this error you will need to request a new confirmation email to be able to confirm your account. You can do this logging out and back in, or going to Upload.

Precautions for public/shared computers

MediaSpurr uses persistent cookies, which means that depending on the security settings of your browser, you'll stay logged on even if you close your browser. If you're using a shared or public computer, remember to log off after you're done enjoying the site.

4 b) Uploading Issues

"Unable to Convert" error

Some users receive this error when trying to upload WMV files. If you've gotten this error, you may want to try converting the video into a different format with a converter or editing program and then uploading it again.

We recommend the MPEG4 format (Divx, Xvid, or SQV3 instead of h.264) at 640x480 resolution with MP3 audio (64k mono). Resizing your file to these specifications before uploading will help your videos look their best on MediaSpurr.

Video only partially uploaded

Occasionally, if your internet drops out while you're in the process of uploading a video, only part or not any part at all, of the file will appear on the site. You may want to try the following:

1. Remove the partial video from your account.
2. Use an editing program to add some empty frames to the end of your complete video.
3. Find a secure internet connection.
4. Upload your complete video again

Video not in search

Depending on site traffic, changes to video information can take 8 hours or more to show up in the search index after they've been uploaded, changed, or removed. This includes changes to tags, ratings, views, and comments. Please be patient -- the video will show in the search index shortly. To bypass this time, you may want to send your friends the link of the video via email or private message.

Note that unless the username of the uploader is specified as a tag it may not be indexed for a video search.

Transferring from DVD to MediaSpurr

DVD files (such as .VOB, .IFO and .BUP files) can't be uploaded to MediaSpurr. These are not actual video files but files used as part of the DVD container format. Our recommended file format is MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid, or SVQ3 rather than h.264) at 640x480 resolution with MP3 audio (64k mono).

Before uploading a video, you may want to go through our Terms & Conditions and Copyright Notices. This may give you a better understanding of the type of videos you can upload.

"Invalid file format" definition

'Invalid file format error' means that your video is in a format that our system doesn't accept. We accept most file formats, including .wmv, .mov, .mpg, or .avi. If your video meets these minimum requirements and still won't upload, it may be due to a problem with the video compression you are using. We recommend the MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid, SVQ3) format at 640x480 resolution with MP3 audio. Resizing your video to these specifications before uploading will help your clips look better on MediaSpurr.

If you're using Windows Movie Maker, it's also possible that you tried to upload your .MSWMM file. This is not an actual movie file. An .MSWMM file is a Windows Movie Maker project file. If you're satisfied with your movie, choose the 'Publish Movie' or 'Save Movie File' option (depending on which version you have) under the 'File' menu and create a movie file such as .avi or .wmv.

Rejected (duplicate upload)

This message means that the video you have uploaded already exists within our system. We run a checksum on all video files that are uploaded to avoid duplicate videos. Simply changing the file name will not resolve this. Please try editing the video again. Changing the video length or compression should allow the video to upload.

Rejected (Terms & Conditions violation)

The video may have been rejected due to a Terms & Conditions or copyright violation. Please review our Terms & Conditions and Copyright Notice.

Upload failed (unable to convert video file)

This message means that your video is in a format that our converters don't recognize. Try converting the video into a different format with a converter or editing program and then uploading it again.

Video response not appearing

If you don't see a video response you have posted, it may be because the owner of the original video has to approve your response before it will appear. Once the owner approves your video, it will appear as a video response under the original.

Video processing time

Processing time varies greatly depending on the format of your original video, file size, and upload traffic. This could take anywhere from a few minutes to several hours.

If after 8 hours you still see a status message next to the video saying "Uploaded (processing, please wait)," try removing the video from our site and uploading it again. To do this, simply click the "Remove Video" button below the video in question in "My Videos" and go through the full upload process again.

Make sure your video is under 15 minutes in length. We accept most video file formats, including .wmv, .mov, .mpg, or .avi. If your video meets these minimum requirements and still won't upload, there may be a problem with the video compression you're using. We recommend the MPEG4 format at 640x480 resolution with MP3 audio.

Failed

Occasionally our servers may not accept raw files. If you haven't run your clip through a movie editing software, you may want to try doing so before attempting to upload the file again. We recommend the MPEG4 format (Divx, Xvid, or SQV3 instead of h.264) at 640x480 resolution with MP3 audio (64k mono). Make sure your video's under 15 minutes in length and under 100 megabytes in size. Resizing your video to these specifications before uploading will help your clips look their best on MediaSpurr.

Most computers come with some sort of video editing application already installed, such as Apple iMovie or Microsoft Movie Maker. Using these programs, you can easily edit your videos, add soundtracks, change the file type, compress the file size, etc. There are also more advanced editing programs available for purchase or download online. We encourage you to look around and find the editing software that's right for you.

Windows Movie Maker files

If you're using Windows Movie Maker, it's possible you're trying to upload your .MSWMM file.

Issues with the first step of the upload process

You may not be able to get past the first page in the uploading process if you enter any of the following into any of the required fields:

* special characters
* HTML tags
* excessive text

If you haven't included any of the above and you're still unable to reach the second uploading step, you may want to clear your browser's cache and cookies and try again.

Long upload time

Uploading a video can take several hours, depending on the length of your video and the demand on the servers. If your video upload is taking longer than 24 hours to complete, we recommend canceling the upload, checking the length and settings for your video, and uploading it again.

Please make sure any firewall software you may have is allowing the connection to our server. If you're on a corporate or school network the connection may be blocked. You might want to check with your network administrator to find out what restrictions your network's under.

You may also want to try clearing your browser cache and cookies and uploading your video again.

Failed (invalid file format)

This status message means that the file type of your video isn't supported by our site. You may need to try using software other than the software that came with your camera, such as Windows Movie Maker (included with every Windows installation), or Apple iMovie. By opening your video file with one of these programs and then saving as .avi, .mpg, .wmv, or .mov, you should be able to upload your video with no problems.

Audio out of sync

Out-of-sync sound is usually the result of using an audio codec that our system doesn't support. We're always adding new ones, but if this happens to your video, you can try re-encoding it with a different audio compression. We recommend MP3 audio for best results.

4 c) Video Player Issues

Videos stuck loading

This could be caused by a number of things. First, you'll need a broadband connection with at least 500+Kbps for the best viewing experience.

If your connection speed meets the minimum requirement but you are still stuck on the loading screen, this could be caused by a firewall or internet blocker. These types of programs could block the media stream from MediaSpurr. If you have a firewall, you might want to temporarily disable it to see if the videos load. If so, you would need to adjust the firewall settings to allow streaming media from MediaSpurr to pass the firewall. If you are not sure on how to do this, please contact the manufacturer of your firewall.

This might also be caused by another streaming application such as Quicktime fighting for the stream. Please check streaming applications installed on your computer like RealPlayer, Quicktime, and Windows Media Player and ensure they are not enabled as the default player.

Finally, you may be trying to view a video that has been marked as "Private" by its owner. Unless you are signed in and invited by that user by sending you the url and the password, you will not be able to see the video. Check another video to determine if all videos are failing to load, or just one.

Videos I watch end early

If a video is cut off while it's loading an incomplete copy can get stuck on your computer, and it will never fully download. You can try again by clearing your browsers cache. If it continues to happen you might want to check the stability of your internet connection.

Can't hear video audio / sound

To make sure that you hear sound while watching videos, please try the following:

* Adjust the volume control on your computer and speakers.
* Adjust the volume control located in the lower right corner of the MediaSpurr Video Player.
* Ensure that the volume is up on other video players, such as Quicktime, Real Player, or Windows Media player, as this might affect the video player sound.
* Try shutting down your computer and then restarting it again.
* Videos on MediaSpurr are streamed through an Adobe Flash player. For the best viewing experience, we suggest you install the latest version of Adobe Flash after removing any old versions you've installed.

Video upside-down or out of sync

It may be a problem with the video compression you are using. We recommend the MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format at 640x480 resolution with MP3 audio. If you uploaded a .mov file, try converting it to .avi or wmv first. Resizing your video to these specifications before uploading will help your clips look better on the video player. You can resize and compress your video using editing software.

Watching videos on dial-up

If a video doesn't play continuously, it may be due to your connection speed. You'll need a broadband connection with at least 500+Kbps for the best viewing experience.

Another possible reason for choppy video playback is that our servers are experiencing high traffic. If this is the case, there's not much you can do. However, we are continuously adding servers to keep up with demand and improve your experience on our site.

It's also possible that your video download speed is slow or inconsistent. In this case, you can try pausing the video until the entire stream is downloaded and then playing the video. Occasionally, an incomplete copy of a video can get stuck in your cache and never fully download. You can re-attempt the download by clearing your browser's cache.

Incomplete buffering and choppy playback

Please follow the tips listed below if you're having trouble playing a video and it gets stuck at one pointplays in a choppy fashion (and will not continue to load):

1. Clear your browser's cache and cookies. To learn how to do this, please visit the following Help Center page.

2. Pause the video. Allow the red loading bar to load completely to the end of the player . Once the video's fully loaded play the video.

The video won't play

Videos on MediaSpurr are streamed through Adobe Flash player. If you're having trouble playing and viewing videos MediaSpurr, we suggest you install the latest version of the Flash player: this will allow you to easily play MediaSpurr videos.

Here's how to upgrade to the most recent version of Adobe's Flash Player:

1. Before installing the most recent version of Adobe Flash player, you will need to first uninstall any older versions of the Flash player you've installed in the past and currently have running on your computer.
Please completely uninstall the version of Flash you're currently running, before upgrading to the most recent version. You'll need to download Adobe's official Uninstaller to remove Flash.
2. Once you've uninstalled the older version of Flash, you'll be ready to upgrade to the most recent version of Flash.
To upgrade to the most recent version of the Flash player, please follow these steps: 1. Follow Adobe's instructions for reinstalling the most recent version of Flash.
2. Once you've downloaded the latest version of Adobe Flash, please exit your browser.
3. Finally, click to install the update that you just downloaded to your computer from the Adobe Flash site.
Once you've done so, open your browser again and go to MediaSpurr. You should now be able so successfully watch videos!

If the instructions above don't resolve the issue, please also try the following:

1. Temporarily disable popup blocking software installed on your computer to test.
2. Allow MediaSpurr.in as a trusted site in your Firewall software.
3. Ensure other applications like Quicktime, iTunes, Real Player, or Windows Media Player aren't set as the default streaming application, as this might affect the video player.

For Windows Vista users:
If the Flash uninstall / reinstall does not work this maybe due to a Microsoft Windows Vista permissions issue.

Please use the Windows button at the bottom left then the search function:

* Go to: C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash\.
* Right-click on the following file: FlashUtil9b.exe or FlashUtil9e.exe.
* Select "Run as Administrator" and install the update..
* Restart your computer.
